Has anyone had a problem with iTunes refusing to open? My BF had iTunes 5.x on a Compaq running WinXP, and (I don't know what precipitated this) one day he tried to open it and it said "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." That kept happening. He tried downloading iTunes 6, and during installation something happened with Quicktime where it wouldn't install. So the second installation of iTunes 6 won't open either, and said it was due to "error code -3". I think he googled a bit and concluded that it was the computer's fault, and that he wouldn't have any luck with Apple's tech support. So I wanted to check in here first to see if anyone knows anything about this.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Yes. Apple more or less ripped off the whole Genius Bar concept from TekServe.
Huh. Cool. Good idea, TekServe.

Does he use Eudora? There's a conflict between the two programs. I had a problem like that, but a quick Google turned up the hacky solution in a couple of minutes (which I can't remember right now but could google again if necessary).

No Eudora, but that's interesting. Maybe he installed some other mail program.

bon bon, I too googled and didn't find much help wrt error code -3. However, it sounds like something got fubar'd and doing a total uninstall / reinstall of Quicktime and iTunes may be helpful.
Quicktime I believe can simply be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs. iTunes, however, sounds like it needs a bigger hammer to get it to totally remove itself. See [link] . HTH.
Thanks for the google. I tried also and while there were people at iPod lounge who also got error code -3, no one seems to have the answer.
I have suggested to Bob that he uninstall it all but he's afraid he'll lose his library. I figure that's unlikely, but I'm no expert.
Here's something about the location of the iTunes library files.
With my new spare computers I have been trying out Linux distributions and keep coming back to Ubuntu although I though Suse was pretty good too. Anyone have strong opinions on Linux distributions?
How's Ubuntu for installing new apps? I admit, I stuck around Red Hat for as long as I did because of the RPMs.
