Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I have a Vaio right now, and let me say -- their TV tuner and recording software sucks. The integration of it with other apps is pretty good, but the equivalent to the intelligence of a season pass didn't exist when I bought the box a year and a half ago.
interesting. thanks for the information. I had no idea such animals existed.
Mine's not dedicated like the one in the article, but I did get it because of the integrated tuner and recording software. I ended up using it much less than I'd expected as a "media centre." It's just a computer, except when Lost is up against VM and I don't feel like torrenting.
However ... I wonder if TiVo can read what the Vaio records ... that'd change things...
Anyone know how I can convert a video on a DVD-R into a streamable file (e.g. WMV)? I have a set of 30-second PSAs they want posted on the school's website, but they only gave me a DVD.
Sean, are you still using Firefox?
Nope, I switched to Opera. Opera lets me do TabEnterPost, Firefox still does not. Safari may, I haven't checked yet. If it does, I'll try that for a while and see if that runs better on the machine.
And will do on switching the keyboards, ND.

Heh. Yes it is. I'd renamed the two drives Romulus and Remus, but I think I may have to rename them Abe and Homer Jay.
Gotta run. Got rehearsal for Mother Courage @ Boston Court tonight, and that runs from this weekend through the end of November, so I won't be able to do much on weekends for Grand Tour, ND. I can do Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, but that's it for evenings. I can still tech during the day on thursday and friday if it helps.
So, I ordered stuff from Shutterfly--this was the first time I've ever ordered prints on line (I know, I'm all behind the times--I just got a digital camera in May!) And I'm wondering if it's just how it works, or something on their end--the picture book I got is awesome, overall, but the one picture I ordered an 8X10 of, the colors are all off--at least, from what I was expecting. On the computer it looks to me like a really great color turqoise-y--very bright and vivid and something that would cheer me up if placed in my cube. Looks like that on my work computer too. But printed out, it's more a muddy/darker/less green blue (still nice and sharp, which is shocking considering it was taken out an airplane window at 30,000 feet, but....).
Should I ask for my money back (they claim a satisfaction guarantee), or should I just be aware that colors may not match what I'm expecting, in the future? (Or, both)

There should be a white paper or five on it up at the Windows Media site.
I can't remember off the top of my head, however.

We've used this to convert VHS to streaming video. I'm reasonably certain it will work for a DVD-R input.
