If one was to, say, take an .mpg file and burn it to a cd, would it automatically play on a DVD player? I'm new to all this stuff.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

I could on my old DVD player, but not on my new one. I think you can search your player here:
Oooooo...that's not good, as I won't know what kind of DVD player I'll be playing it on, since I'll be using one from school. Hmmmm...
It depends on the DVD player. I think you'd have a much better chance if you could make either a VCD or a DVD.
I can't make a DVD. How do I make it a VCD?
If you don't have a burning program on your machine, I've heard people say good things about VCD Easy. Possibly even here. It's got a free trial.
What's the main issue? The size of the file? Or the fact that the room has a DVD player but not a computer?
Or the fact that the room has a DVD player but not a computer?
This. There's no projector in the room, so I need to be able to play it from a DVD player.
I believe a VCD should play, but again, it will probably depend on the player. Someone around here surely knows more about this than I do.
It does depend on the DVD player. I think that the newer the player, the more likely it will support VCDs.
tommyrot, thanks for the link to the Longhorn article. Very interesting - I forwarded it to many of my co-workers.
