Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I dunno if I can remember all this crap, but... have you turned on file sharing?

Yeah, I did file sharing when attempting to set up the network.

OK, can all the computers see the internet? If so, have you tried pinging one of the computers from another computer?

Yes. All computers can see Internet. How do you ping?

Find out the IP address of one of the computers. Go to another computer, open a DOS window and type "ping " without the quotes, followed by the IP address, and hit "enter."

EG:

ping 194.168.1.1

Well, I gotta run - good luck!

eta: the purpose of this is just to check if the computers can see each other at all. If it works, then it's a Windows networking issue.

It's a really good tutorial on setting up a home network with Windows.

All is well that ends in pizza.

Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional do not work and play network well with each other.

Or at least easily....

Ah...so that's why I *still* can't see Emily's computer. Nice.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I'm finally getting around to getting rid of my old computer that's been sitting in a closet for several months. I remember asking here ages ago about the best way to attach the second hard drive ( Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, 120GB ) to my new Mac (Powermac G5), but I've been procrastinating so long that the only thing I still remember is that I'd be better off using it as an external drive. (I've got enough ports free to do either Firewire or USB)

Recommendations/advice/how-to/etc?

[eta: Oh, and I don't need to preserve any of the data on the drive, since I moved it all over to the new computer months ago.]
