Thanks, steph. I looked around a bit there and some of the same problems are being noted with 4.8 that I have had and seen mentioned elsewhere. I went ahead and reloaded 4.8 anyway and it is getting along with the iPod for now. I am keeping 4.7 though, just in case.

No advice on the phone thing? I almost went ahead and bought one with an answering machine (it's the Costco thing -- they don't always have exactly what you want, but there's the overwhelming feeling it's a good deal, so you should do it anyway). Except I want voice mail, and I really doubt any of those will tell me that I have Verizon messages waiting. So no dice.

I did browse their printers, since I was there, and wondered -- anyone familiar with printable CD/DVD technology? Is it better/cheaper than labels? Also, are bluetooth printers a missed fad? Would I be better served with a wireless ethernet external print server? I am tempted by the Apple thingummy that also serves iTunes, but mostly idly for now. Either way, there's no space for my printer within cable-easy distance of my PC.

When I got Verizon voicemail, they sent me a caller ID box and that's what blinked when I had a new message. Don't know if that helps.

Edit: Except I'm a liar and never had Verizon voicemail anyway. I had AT&T.

I have a printer that can print to CDs. It works fine. I don't know if it's any cheaper, but I do know that sticky CD labels don't play nicely with slot-loading drives.

Right now, all the handsets and the base unit will blink and tell me if I have mail. It's kinda handy. I'm kinda dense that way.

What's a good brand to start with, for cordless phones? If Panasonic has seen the error of their ways in the past three years, I'm willing to consider them again, but right now I'm once bitten twice shy.

Interesting. I now have one of those, in the Powerbook. That slants my "replace plastic bit that'll probably break again or buy new" decision a little towards that Epson printer.

Does anyone else use Azureus? I loaded the newest version a couple of days ago, and since then, haven't been able to download any torrents. I've uninstalled/reinstalled it a couple of times, and no joy.

Any ideas? I've reached the end of my limited abilities, computer-wise.

Erin, same thing happened to me. I now use BitTornado. I did everything the Azureus help files said to do, and then heard from Dana I wasn't alone in my grief, and promptly stopped troubleshooting.

I only use BitTornado because it was the first thing I downloaded. It's not nifty like Azureus used to be, with the multiple downloads in one interface, or anything.

I accidentally started Azureus this morning, and it complained about my Java version (which it didn't do any other time between upgrade and now) -- maybe this weekend I'll upgrade and see if that fixes it.
