Oh for god's sake. I dl the thing, and now I can't unzip it. I had winzip, now apparently I don't. Pardon me while I bang my head repeatedly on the desk.
I'll get this fixed. Tomorrow.
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

this looks like the place to ask about this problem, bearing in mind that i will probably NOT use the correct terms for pieces/parts. *g*
here is the problem:
my operating system: i have *shudder* Windows ME. for some reason i have been unable to do a defrag of the harddrive. each time i try it, the whole thing starts over after a short time (like 5 - 10 secs). it gives me the message that it had to restart the defrag b/c the file/s had changed while the defrag was running.
yes, i have turned off all the other programs (the ones that are on the taskbar) before i start the defrag and have no frellin idea why i get that message. is there something that would be running in the background that i should close?
hope you all can suggest something. other than get rid of Windows ME. ;)
halfrek! The same thing happens to me when I run defrag. It takes it for-freaking-ever, but it does, eventually, finish. Why it takes so long, I dunno.
Upgrading to XP may be the only help for both of us. :)
No winzip at all? Or just not automatically invoked?
I too have downloaded "StartupCPL." It is working OK for me. The unzipped version is only 72Kb.
halfrek, I had that problem. I fixed it by endtasking the processes that were interrupting the defrag program. Gimme a minute to remember what they were....
halfrek, you'll probably need to boot windows into safe-mode to insure that nothing is running that can interfere with the defrag.
The link below gives two methods to do this.
Once Windows has started in safe-mode, run the defrag like you usually would.
One was DSSagent.exe installed by Broderbund with my genealogy software.
One was tgcmd.exe, which came with Sony's system backup.
Two came with Quicken: QTTask.exe and LoadQM.exe
I think that was all.
thank you, dcp and tommyrot. glad that i am NOT the only one that has had this problem. i will definitely give it a go tomorrow. of course now i am wondering why the other computer people in the house didnt know how to fix this. *glares in their direction*
I have had no end of trouble with Windows ME on my laptop. I think that is the devil's operating system. I really do.
I have a (probably clueless) question about Yahoo mail's address book. It has a feature that will let you import those addresses into another mail program. Sadly, that feature does not list Apple's mail program. Would telling it to import to Outlook Express work, even though I'm not using OE?
