If you have your ipod synced to your home computer, then when you plug it into the new computer it should pop up an iTunes dialog box that says something like "iPod IPOD_NAME is already synced to another computer. Do you want to change the syncing to this computer, erasing the songs on it and replacing it with those on this one, switch it to manual mode, or ignore it?" or something to that effect.

this didn't happen when i plugged the iPod into the computer, it happened when i brought up iTunes and went to update songs on iPod. same thing?

Same thing. For me, iTunes opens automatically when I plug it in, so yeah.

I think that, with ephpod, it may be possible to do some advance syncing across two computers, as long as id3 tags are the same or very similar to avoid duplicates. I'm not certain, though.

If you change it to manual mode, you'll be able to copy the songs from work to your iPod.

Ohh! But first, you'll want to use a third party app to copy the new songs from your iPod to the home PC, or else you'll lose the new songs when you re-synch!

Manual Mode. Take total control over the contents of your iPod by dragging individual songs to create your own custom playlists. This lets you decide when you want to update your iPod (it will not be affected by any changes in your music library). To switch to Manual Mode, connect the iPod to your Mac with the FireWire cable, click on the iPod Options button, and select “Manually manage songs and playlists.”

If you've got extra memory in your iBook yank it out and see if the problem goes away. It may be a bad memory chip.

I went vicariously computer shopping with a friend last night. She ended up with an Averatec (sp?). It was, by all appearances, ridiculously good for the price she paid. Has anyone heard of them or ever had one?
