Oh good. Now I don't feel bad about only watching one ep.
Of Carnivale? It's slow moving, but things do pay off. I'm really enjoying it.

I'd heard such great things about it, but the first ep drove me absolutely batshit.
As long as they keep revealing stuff - and it dosen't contradict to much other stuff, I'll be ok.
I don't have a lot of practical skills - but I learn really quickly. things I know I could do :
cook
Keep a fire going
Haul
learn to maintain things like the water system
and every now and then I would have some flash of brillance that would be a really good idea.
and I can be a really pain when it comes to "reminding" people of rules for health and safety.

Oh, no! It really is a fabulous show. I haven't seen the second series yet, but to me the first series seemed like a whole lot of foreplay.
i'm with Allyson. i can't offer much, but i can deliver snark if need be! is it any wonder Sawyer is my favorite character?
but the first ep drove me absolutely batshit.
I've tried to watch it sporadically and this is the what happened to me every time. I appreciate the art direction and such but it is too maddening for me.
I was Sawyer in the quiz. But really I'd rather do than be.

Was it the pacing, or something else? I think the writers spent more time world building than was absolutely necessary - perhaps not trusting the audience to follow along unless things were spelled out. By episodes 4-5-6 however, things are moving along and consequential things are happening to the characters.

It was the pacing and everything else. In general, I have very little tolerance to that sort of ooh, check us out, we're WEIRD atmosphere. And I hated all the characters. And the acting and the writing.

Yes, this. It was like Freakass TV 101, and I felt completely talked-down to.
I'm watching S1 of Carnivale on right now (and TiVo'ing S2 for later watch), and I gotta admit, deep DEEP symbolism and the portents and the whole Life o' Despair shtick can get sort of old. Right now, I'm watching it mainly for the atmosphere and characters (I love Jonesy, Sophie, Samson and the Freaky Blind Dude whose name I forget), and the occasional moments when it punches me in the gut, like that whole thing with the miners and Dora Mae (like, one of the most upsetting things I've seen on TV EVAH) and the bit between Jonesy and Rita Sue in the episode I saw last night.
The first season of Carnivale convinced me that I don't want to watch the second.
The bad writing and lazy plotting on Lost irritates me regularly these days, but they do have a hell of a premise. When they get the characters right, it's pretty enjoyable.
Edit -- geez, I sound like a grumpy old man today. Guess I'd better go shout at the damn kids on the lawn.
