I was kind of hoping someone clever would fashion one out of a piece of fuselage or the like... Eventually something like Gunn's axe, even.

I would definitely figure out a way to build a forge eventually, what with all that nice metal to work with. At least make a piece of the wreckage into an anvil

And the landing gear? Parts for a water wheel. That and some wiring stripped out from the wreckage and some magnetite, I could make a crude generator. Heck there might even be magnets scavengable from the cockpit equipment. Maybe even servos.

Then lights from parts of the fuselage that wasn't burned, and I'd be in Macgyvering heaven.

Federal Aviation Regulations
§ 125.207 Emergency equipment requirements:
(a) No person may operate an airplane having a seating capacity of 20 or more passengers unless it is equipped with the following emergency equipment:
...(2) A crash axe carried so as to be accessible to the crew but inaccessible to passengers during normal operations.

IIRC, it is a hand axe stowed in the cockpit, so the full-size axe should be written off as creative license.

He totally changes the subject to something else (being rescued?) and laughs a little (or does something dismissive. I'm going to have to watch this ep again). She shuts him out and he says, "Why are you this way?" Because, of course, it's all her fault she's not communicating with him properly.
