The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration

This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.

By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.

***SPOILER ALERT***

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

By the way, I edited Lilty's first post in this thread to announce the book and deadline.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

The only exception I would make, which I believe is the context in which early white-fonted discussion was first raised, is if someone has a specific question while reading the book that can't wait until the proper discussion begins. e.g., if there was a historical reference with which the reader was unfamiliar.

That seems cool.

Now what would be nice is a read and post. On my mark, open your books. In 90 minutes give me your comments on chapter one.

He he. We could do, like a mini one where we do an obscenely short book over a week or so, reading a little bit each night or something.

By the way, I edited Lilty's first post in this thread to announce the book and deadline.

Sweet.

Well, there are short short stories. And we could probably find some older ones online via Project Gutenberg.

Shiny! I was kind of crossing my fingers and hoping for this one. So the official start date for this one, barring schedule and other changes, would be September 15th?

I've already gotten The Intuitionist delivered to my desk by placing a hold, and have now placed a hold on My Name is Asher Lev. I should get it on my desk Monday or Tuesday. I love working in a library. The pay is crap, but fresh books get delivered to my desk. Ahhh!

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I don't think I understand the shifting of discussion date concept at all. I don't need to until at least after Aug. 15th, right?

And, thanks, Jon, for editing Lilty's post.

I don't think I understand the shifting of discussion date concept at all. I don't need to until at least after Aug. 15th, right?

Well my suggestion was we make the reading deadline of My Name is Asher Lev August 31st instead of Sept. 15th. That way we now have 4 weeks to read Intuitionist and 6 weeks to read the second one. (Although 4 of those weeks overlap.) Then we start discussion on Book 1 on August 15th and if discussion dies anytime after August 31st we know everyone has already finished Book 2 by then and we can proceed to the next book (giving people notice in Press and stuff.)

I know there has been some hesitation about this plan, but if we schedule the reading deadline by August 31st and then it turns out not to be enough time, or we end up using the whole month on discussion, or we decide later that fuck Wolfram and his crazy-ass plan, then we can always extend the deadline two weeks. NSM the other way around.
