I think he denied Snape the position knowing the Snape would prolly leave the school as the others have and wanted him at H'warts to keep an eye on him. I also think he gave it to him their 6th year knowing that he would probably not be able to teach the following year.

The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration
This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.
By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.
***SPOILER ALERT***
But wait! Wasn't Quirrell there for at least a few years?
I smell a RetCon.
What he sees as "hate and revulsion" on Snape's face at the moment he's about to kill Dumbledore might actually be anguish and anger, that Dumbledore is making him do this horrible thing.
Nice.
I'm in the camp that thinks S and D planned what happened, as a way to firmly establish Snape's allegiance to Voldemort so he can go deep undercover. However, I'm not totally convinced that Dumbledore is dead. After all, we never actually "saw" his body after the attack, so we don't know who or what was under the robe Hagrid was carrying. Feigning death could spur others to finding hitherto hidden depths of strength or "goodness", while also giving Dumbledore the freedom to pursue the other Horcruxes and Voldemort without pursuit.
Then, of course, there is "R.A.B."; who is it and what else have they done against Voldemort?
But wait! Wasn't Quirrell there for at least a few years?
The first book says he was at the school, but I'm not sure that it directly says he was teaching DADA. I just figured that Lord V lifted the curse for one of his own.
R.A.B. -- Regulus Black, Sirius' brother. The story is that LV killed him or had him killed after Regulus tried to get out of the Death Eaters. So, it fits that he would "betray" LV by destroying one of the horcruxes.
But wait! Wasn't Quirrell there for at least a few years?
I vaguely recall something about him only just have gotten the job, which was why Snape was freshly mad at him.
R.A.B. -- Regulus Black, Sirius' brother.
A nice theory and probably the one she'll go with but we'll see.
Since there was so much mention of casting unspoken spells, what are the chances that Snape fired off one of those to negate the killing curse that he zapped Dumbledore with? Yet another way to work out a NotDeadYet!Dumbledore.
Why would Grimmauld Place still be in Sirius' name? I would have thought the Ministry would seize it when he was sent to Azkaban.
I have a hard time believing DD is alive, although it is possible. For one thing, Hagrid carried the body. Hagrid can't keep a secret to save his life. But it's also really easy to fool him. Secondly, Harry unfroze at the moment of DD's "death". But DD could have just released the spell. And thirdly, the portrait appeared in the headmaster/mistress office. But that could also have been pre-arranged, although McGonagall would have probably been in on it.
And JK in her interview was very dodgy on the subject of DD and HP7. Very. Dodgy.
Okay, now I've switched camps, and he is alive. Or is he?
