The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration

This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.

By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.

"You see? THAT's what they want. Love, and a bit with a dog."

The Buffista Book Club 1: It should be smelly

That works, too! We've really got a plethora of Giles' quotes for future titles.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I like JenP's slug or description or whatever it was.

All the names are good, I don't care which one we go with.

Do we have to decide what sort of books to start with or do we go straight to suggestions?

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

I think we go straight for suggestions, though I would suggest that we don't try like, "Rememberance of Things Past" right off the bat.

ETA- Smelly and the plug are fine with me.

Yes, how are we going to handle the whole suggestion process. Do we make any ground rules, other than say, it must be written in a language we can all understand and must not cause the proliferation of bunnies if read aloud?

Because, I got one.

Is there some randoming thing. 'Cause I'm thinking we give, 2-3 days to let people volunteeer to pick. Random up their names and then go from there. Whoever was going to do the randoming probably shouldn't be in the running for a book- not that they would unrandom the randoming, but that way there'd never even be a question.

I have a book I'd like to suggest, but if no one wants to do the randoming- I'll do that.

Randoming works for me- I've got one that I'd love to have people talk about with me, but it by no means needs to be a first, second, or even third book. Just an idea. Since I've got to go to work now, I'll just throw it out for people to put into a pool- I mentioned it the other day, and I believe only one person in Literary had read it- Into the Forest by Jean Heglund.

Aight, off to work I go- I can't wait to check back in tommorrow to see what people have come up with!

In terms of how to gather info:

Should we start by having someone collect suggestions via e-mail? I volunteer to collect titles, authors, and a short blurb from everyone who is suggesting (or, if someone else wanted to do that, that works, too). I think that'd be easier than trying to herd everything together here. Or, actually, people could do both, just compiling the list would be easier from e-mails than from slogging through posts, I'd think.

I'd suggest limiting it to two or three titles per person to start. Could post the titles every so often as they come in so that people know they're not repeating, or so that they could send in new titles if there are dupes. Do this for, say four days or so. Then post a final list from which to pick (however we decide to do that).

Thoughts?

Cindy's slug suggestion (with one part taken out), which people seem to like is:

One book in all the world. A Chosen One. Once a month. Come. Read. Discuss.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Randoming works for me- I've got one that I'd love to have people talk about with me, but it by no means needs to be a first, second, or even third book. Just an idea.

What comes to my mind is introducing people to one of my favorite books, The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro. And now that I think about it, Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorrie Moore is a good candidate as well. Both are relatively short, which is a plus. Like Lilty, I'm just throwing these out, and if people show interest, then rock.

Into the Forest by Jean Heglund.

Hegland, as I discovered trying to find it on Amazon. Looks interesting.

Mine is If Not Now, When? one of my very favorite ever books.

I think probably just throwing one title out there is enough for as many people as we will probably have suggesting.

Visilurking

The thread - it's so beautiful. (sniff)

Anyway, what's randomizing? I thought we were going to have suggestions from folks who feel like getting their pimp on for the book of their choice?

How about we consense on 3 books for the first 3 months and set discussion to start on the first book on August 15?
