The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress

[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

It would be like not enjoying Wesley on Angel. *cough*

Heh. Well, there are different kinds of "enjoying," right?

And thanks, Matt. I always thought it was funny that I seemed to get pegged as just hating the show completely around the time I started enjoying it. (Er, I don't mean by you in particular, because now I'm free-associating. I like naps!) But for me anyway, getting more invested meant finding more things to make fun of. I think that the episodes I liked have much funnier recaps than the episodes I hated, but I know the jokes can read as critical when sometimes they're truly just jokes. Which, and I'm excited to discover I have a point here that isn't completely self-absorbed, I think also happens with the forum posters. Jokes about things that bugged don't necessarily mean that the poster hated the episode, but they can read that way.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Jokes about things that bugged don't necessarily mean that the poster hated the episode, but they can read that way.

They can, which is why I always try to make it a point to note the positives and reinforce my actual feelings on the episode in the same post.

Hey, my point is completely self-absorbed! Go me!

"Don' be e-scared"

Wow. I honestly didn't mean anything by my TWoP comment. I figured it was kind of a given what I was saying. And maybe I stopped reading the boards too soon after Firefly and Wonderfalls started, but initially when those shows debuted, the above-it-all carping looked just exactly the same as what they're saying now about The Inside. So when I said that didn't surprise me, that's all I meant by it.

I do make some distinction between recappers and posters. I think that's fair. I used to read that site all the time, mostly for Strega's recaps. But let's be honest here, net active viewers of a show are generally, "Gosh, why does the show SUCK SO MUCH NOW!!!" in any given season. Shark jumping is always what's happening on screen the season they're posting about it. I'd read the Angel boards from the start, since I was with the show from the start. And Strega's nastiest recaps were always my favorites. Granted, I may have enjoyed her nastiest recaps of "Tru Calling" more, 'cause, I mean, darts not aimed at me. Still, I loves me some good snarky recaps. And I was really kind of amazed by how great her writing was (is), right up there with Allyson. And maybe, Strega, you're right, the nasty things might echo more and maybe there were some good things said by posters, but I always had the feeling that anyone who admitted to not loathing something had to sort of do it with an apology.

If I were really into S&M, I'd still be reading those boards.

Allyson, did the mini Sigmond who says I write about S&M a lot give any other examples? 'cause I'm not coming up with any. But I guess after more than a 100 plus hours of produced tv writing, I might be forgetting something. I guess I'm just too repetitive. Space cowboys, Superman, vampires, FBI agents, talking animals. It's all the same. I should try to mix it up a bit.

Didn't you chain Angel to a bed during sweeps, once?

You're up. I need quotes.

"Don' be e-scared"

One last thought on all this -- I think... could be wrong... but I don't think I have, as a rule, knocked people for despising my work. I think the only public criticism I made about the nastiness aimed at Wonderfalls was that the recaps weren't funny. I mean, like at all. And when you're slamming a comedy for not being funny, and you're supposedly doing it in a humor piece... um, better bring the giggles. Just sayin'.
