The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress

[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Hey. New board.

Putting Clarice and Nancy Drew in there makes me have to think Veronica Mars fits in there somewhere.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

I'm going to give this show a shot, mostly because of Tim. I'm a mystery fan, but I don't tend to like serial killer stuff.(Home came off as a bit gratuitous to me in its use of gore for shock value)

(Edited to clarify)

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

The Inside sounds a lot like the first season of Millenium as far as tone, look and subject matter. And I enjoyed that a lot (though some of it was super-creepy and harrowing). But I think I will prefer a larger ensemble cast covering that material so there's more character interaction.

Though, I've no place to send the review.

Um, here? I know, not so official. But I imagine your conversion rate would be high.

[insert something funny here]

These people don't listen to me. I'm a fan. They'll just pat me on the head and pinch my cheeks and say, "oh aren't you the most precious little fan!"

And when I say, "Please don't be so condescending," they'll say, "oh and the cutie wittle fan knows such BIG WORDS!"

That sucks. I can only imagine how frustrating that would be.

To be fair, it looks like Allyson and others have done way more "marketing" for the show than FOX has. Aside from just being a Pimp-Daddy of all things Tim, there's a genuine, focused generation of pre-release information, with specificity to this show. All before the network had even decided on which font to use (or title, for that matter).

Don't get me wrong - I'm not dissing the FOX marketing - from what I have heard of the promos and seen of the screencaps the recently launched trailers are very effective, and it may be early days in the planned marketing sweep for the show... I'm just saying that it kinda sucks if the amazing word-of-mouth buzz that has been generated online for The Inside is being patronisingly dismissed by powers that be with a "bless those ickle fans" attitude.

Methinks if they could get over and that and see fans as a positive force and a harness-able resource, they might not only exponentially increase the quality and quanitity of their marketing, but also be less loathed generally (yes, I still have to check my posts sometimes to make sure there's an O and not a U).

While I appreciate my perspective may be skewed as I don't even live in the US or watch FOX or any of its network affiliates, and probably have little real understanding of the way these things work, I'd imagine that's a fair summation, no?

(okay, so maybe I am dissing the FOX marketing. An ickle bit)

I mean, stuff like this:

I need to go out to the net and recruit.

Wake up Web Marketing People! She does these things for free! Now that's a crime that should be investigated....

*applauds*

I may not buy the lunchbox, but perhaps a T-Shirt or tasteful mug.

Unless of course, I watch the first episode and it sucks. Though I strongly doubt that's going to be the case.

As far as selling points go, "Tim Minear, FBI, Dark" does the job for me. That's without even mentioning that there are Pretty People in it. Or that Jane E and The Fury are on board. Also? Adam Baldwin. He good. Me like.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

The Inside sounds a lot like the first season of Millenium as far as tone, look and subject matter. And I enjoyed that a lot (though some of it was super-creepy and harrowing). But I think I will prefer a larger ensemble cast covering that material so there's more character interaction.

This is what I'm getting plus a bit of ALIAS in Coyote's spy-daddy vibe. My big concern with the Millenium factor is the lack of humor (as great as it was, humor was not a strong suit first season - Jose Chung and the demons helped in that department later) and the "serial-killer-of-the-week-thing" which I think is what turned people off to Millenium by the time they got around to the mythology (which, though they basically did a total reset the last season, SEEMED to have a more concrete, planned basis than the X-Files later proved to - if the show had ended season two before the reset, it would have been two of the most brilliant seasons of scary television topped off with the most depressing ending ever). Jane and Tim will bring the funny, I am sure (per what Allyson has said, but also on past performance). Ditto with Fury coming over.

But, yeah, Tim had me at "Hey".
