I'm really ignorant; this has seemed to me like a really long delay between pilot and airing. Is this typical? I thought the general rule was pilot in April, air in Fall.

The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
The original show was supposed to be a mid-season replacement. A lot has changed since then.
A classic example of this is the live-action "Tick" series, which got held back for almost a year from when it was initially supposed to run. By the time it finally got to air, the series had wrapped shooting for so long, there was virtually no chance of getting all the principals back, even if it were a hit.

I have no tears, Hagga said.
You mean Nestor, Hec? Forgettable time on Century City, for one.

That's him! Nestor Carbonel, right?
Anyway, he's got brilliant comic chops, and his good looks will probably prevent him from getting those kind of jobs. Look how it stunted Cary Grant's career!
Betsy! The 13 Clocks?
