I think your definition is probably not the same as mine. To me, while a BNF can also be a beloved member of an internet community, they aren't the same thing.

Me too. I think my exposure was through Dana and/or shrift, and it was never kind, and predated the rise of LJ, as far as I can tell.

Recently, there was a debate in the Firefly fandom regarding Joss' political views. A fan quite smugly said that there was no way that Joss is a liberal, because Buffy and Firefly were both written from a conservative viewpoint.
I said, not true. Joss is very liberal.
