They're reshowing the early series of "Buffy" in the UK, and I've realised why "Angel" had to end - in the last year or so DB has become far too chubby. In the penultimate ep - Angel and Spike in Rome - where we get a flashback to them being chained to the ceiling, JM wore only shorts while DB was given an undershirt, obviously to hide his flabby chest. Come to think of it, while we used to get a glimpse of Angel's naked torso in almost every other ep, we haven't been allowed to see it for a long time. I suppose a fat vampire is conceivable, but a fat romantic vampire - no!
Angel 5: Is That It? Am I Done?
[NAFDA] This is where we talk about the show! Anything that's aired in the US (including promos) is fair game. No spoilers though -- if you post one by accident, an admin will delete it.
I talked to David at a convention in May. If he was still chubby as the final episodes of the show were being shot, I want the info on the weight loss program he used to arrive where I saw him over the space of a couple of months.
When he was Buffy's platonic boyfriend Angel had dramatically hollow cheeks. As CEO of Wolfram and Hart he was almost jowly.
This sounds like a guy version of the "Tara is fat" debate. By TV standards, he looked a little big, and he's definitely gained weight since his Buffy debut. But by normal human standards he looks great.
Hmm. In S1 and some of S2 Buffy, I thought DB looked way too thin. He was a wee bit chunky in S3, but he looked great in S5.
But by normal human standards he looks great.
That's the problem. Normal human standards don't apply to vampires . He was so clearly older, and fatter (which is hardly suprising - I'm older and fatter than I was when Buffy began) that I agree it was starting to be a bit jarring
Quality trolling, Dai.

Yeah, the fact that he breathed was really annoying, too. Broke the fourth wall with every exhale.

And yet, still less jarring to me than just how much of his age Marsters was showing there at the end. (I appear to have an easier time fanwanking chubby cheeks than I do crow's feet.)

Yeah, that too.
